해리스 부통령은 25일 응우옌 쑤언 푹 베트남 국가주석과 만나 양국이 남중국해에서 중국의 위협에 공동으로 대처하자고 제안했다고 AP통신 등 외신이 보도했다.
해리스 부통령은 푹 주석과 만난 자리에서 "우리는 중국이 유엔해양법협약을 준수하도록 압력을 가하는 한편 과도한 영유권 주장과 위협에 대처할 방안을 찾아야 한다"고 밝혔다.
그러면서 베트남이 남중국해에서 안보상 이익을 지킬 수 있도록 미국은 추가로 해안경비정을 지원하겠다고 덧붙였다.
이에 중국은 미국이 오히려 남중국해의 평화와 안정을 해친다고 맞받아쳤다.
왕원빈(汪文斌) 중국 외교부 대변인은 이날 정례브리핑에서 "중국은 미국이 남중국해 해역에서 법 집행 능력을 갖추고 지역 문제에 개입하며 지역 평화와 안정을 교란하는 데 단호히 반대한다"고 말했다.
왕 대변인은 "미국은 지금까지 유엔 해양법협약 가입을 거부하면서도 도리어 협약을 지켜야 한다고 주장한다. 또 아프가니스탄, 이라크, 시리아에 군사 개입을 하면서 소국의 이익을 수호한다고 말한다"면서 "미국이 자신의 패권 지위와 이익을 수호하기 위해서라고 한다면 믿을 수 있을 것"이라고 비아냥거렸다.
한편 해리스 부통령은 미국과 베트남 양국의 관계를 포괄적 파트너십에서 전략적 파트너십으로 확대하자고 제안했다.
